A 26-year-old man allegedly drowned while swimming in the pool of a private school in the Najafgarh area of southwest Delhi, the police said on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Roy, a resident of Jharoda village in Delhi.
The police said they received information from Tarak Hospital about a man who had drowned while swimming at the pool of a private school in Najafgarh. After getting information, a police team rushed to the hospital.
During preliminary enquiry, the police found that Rahul went to the school’s swimming pool with three friends — Suraj Singh, Tarun Kumar and Bhavishya — on Wednesday evening.
“He allegedly drowned in the pool around 5.30 pm, following which his friends and others present at the spot rushed him to Tarak Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” a police officer said.
The police are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the drowning and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the swimming facility at the time of the incident.
The body has been shifted to the mortuary of Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The police inspected the swimming pool and the surrounding area soon after the incident. Statements of Rahul’s friends and others present at the spot are being recorded as part of the investigation.
The police said a case under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita had been registered and further investigation was underway. No arrests had been made so far.
