New Delhi: Liquor shops across Delhi have been instructed to close earlier than their usual operating hours amid ongoing student protests in the national capital.

According to official sources, liquor outlets, which normally remain open until 10 p.m., have been directed to shut by 8 p.m. until the end of the weekend. The decision was reportedly taken following security assessments linked to the protests at Jantar Mantar.

The restrictions were implemented after liquor shops were unexpectedly asked to close on Thursday, forcing several customers to return without making purchases.

A senior Delhi official said the temporary order had been issued based on police advisories in view of the prevailing law and order situation around the protest site.

Security measures have also affected public transport. On Friday, 18 metro stations in central Delhi remained closed, up from 17 stations that were shut the previous day. Although the Supreme Court had directed that the metro stations be reopened on Thursday, authorities later closed the New Delhi Metro Station at around 1:30 p.m. after protesters used social media to urge participants to reach Jantar Mantar through the station.

Internet restrictions also continued in parts of central Delhi on Friday. Several app-based services, including ride-hailing platforms, food delivery applications, and digital payment services, were reported to be unavailable in the affected areas.

The temporary restrictions are expected to remain in place while authorities continue to monitor the situation surrounding the student demonstrations.
