A mathematics teacher working at various coaching institutes in the Mukherjee Nagar area of northwest Delhi was arrested for allegedly conducting a recce of a businessman who received extortion calls from the Hari Boxer–Lawrence Bishnoi gang demanding Rs 10 crore, officials said on Thursday.
The accused was identified as Amit Bishnoi (35), who worked as a mathematics faculty member at several coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Praveen Tripathi, in a statement, said the investigation stemmed from a case registered after a businessman received a call from a foreign number threatening him with dire consequences if he refused to pay Rs 10 crore.
The caller identified himself as Hari Boxer and threatened to kill the businessman and his children if the money was not paid within a week. He also shared a video of the victim's office and threatened to blow it up, the DCP said.
Based on technical surveillance and investigation, Bishnoi was arrested.
The officer said Bishnoi, a B.Tech graduate from Faridabad, Haryana, had prepared for the UPSC and SSC examinations in Mukherjee Nagar.
Since 2018, he had been working as a mathematics faculty member at various coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar. He allegedly became acquainted with Lawrence Bishnoi through a mutual friend in Haryana in 2014.
Later, he allegedly established contact with Boxer, who tasked him with gathering information about the victim's family and business and sharing it with him, Tripathi said.
