The Directors General of Police (DGPs) from five northern states and officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will meet on Tuesday to discuss breaking organised gangster syndicates operating across state lines.

The meeting comes days after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States filed a chargesheet against the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria crime syndicates.

The meeting, hosted by Punjab Police and organised by the NIA, will be attended by the DGPs of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi, along with senior NIA officers. Sources said the agenda includes coordinated action against gangs that have expanded operations beyond Punjab, pooling shooters, arms and logistics across jurisdictions.

Officials clarified the meeting had been scheduled earlier and was not linked to the FBI chargesheet, though the timing coincided. Discussions will also cover police coordination on drug smuggling and cross-border terrorism. No specific agenda item has been listed on possible law and order concerns over the release of the Punjabi film Satluj.

The primary focus remains organised crime, particularly gangster syndicates that have spread into multiple states. Such coordination meetings between DGPs and central agencies have been held earlier in Haryana and Delhi, sources added.

Gangsters like Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria are known to have established networks with groups in Haryana, Rajasthan and the Delhi National Capital Region.

The US action has put Punjab's gangsters in global spotlight.
