Dindigul police on Thursday conducted an anti-drug awareness rally and also highlighted the importance of road safety.

Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar flagged off the awareness rally. He said 718 accidents occurred in the district last year alone, with three persons losing their lives in road accidents every two days.

He said road accidents should be avoided and urged the public to strictly adhere to the road safety rules. This practice should begin at the school level, he said, adding that the programme was conducted to raise awareness about both road safety and the dangers of substance abuse.

He said there was an alarming rise in substance use, particularly smoking, consuming alcohol and using ganja among the students. The main objective of the rally was to create awareness and curb the menace, he said.

He highlighted that substance abuse ruined families and society. Education should be the main priority for the students, he said.

Dindigul police were actively conducting inspections across the district and seizing ganja and other narcotic substances. Those involved in the offence were arrested, he said.

The SP said awareness should begin at home and preventing drug abuse would create a healthy and vibrant young generation. He distributed awareness leaflets to the public. The awareness rally which commenced near the Dindigul bus stand, proceeded via AMC Road, and concluded at Kumaran Park.
