The triumph crowned East Bengal’s golden era under coach P.K. Banerjee, during which the club won six successive Calcutta Football League titles between 1970 and 1975 before producing its most iconic derby performance.
2. October 25, 2009 | I-League | Mohun Bagan 5-3 East Bengal
Thirty-four years after the infamous 5-0 defeat, Mohun Bagan produced its own five-goal statement by defeating East Bengal 5-3 in a pulsating I-League encounter. Although it could not wipe away the memory of the 1975 humiliation because East Bengal managed three goals, the victory went a long way towards restoring pride in one of Indian football’s fiercest rivalries.
3. July 13, 1997 | Federation Cup Semifinal | East Bengal 4-1 Mohun Bagan
Played before a packed Salt Lake Stadium, this remains one of the defining Kolkata Derbies. Baichung Bhutia became an instant East Bengal legend by scoring the first hat-trick in the fixture’s history as P.K. Banerjee’s side dismantled Mohun Bagan 4-1. The victory also marked the collapse of coach Amal Dutta’s much-hyped ‘Diamond System’, with P.K. Banerjee’s famed ‘Vocal Tonic’ proving far more effective than Dutta’s tactical experiment inspired by the European ‘MU Formation’.
4. March 22, 2000 | National Football League | East Bengal 3-1 Mohun Bagan
Mohun Bagan entered the derby as the dominant side on its way to winning the National Football League title, but East Bengal produced one of the biggest upsets in the rivalry. Falguni Dutta scored twice before Ghanaian striker Jackson Agyapong added another to stun the favourites. Brazilian star José Barreto netted Mohun Bagan’s only goal, but the defeat sparked angry scenes as frustrated supporters reportedly burnt club flags and emblems outside the stadium.
5. August 17, 2007 | Calcutta Football League | Mohun Bagan 4-3 East Bengal
Few derbies have matched the drama of this seven-goal thriller. Mohun Bagan raced to a commanding 4-1 lead through a brace from S. Venkatesh and goals from Lalawmpuia and José Barreto, while Alvito D’Cunha scored East Bengal’s first. The contest took another dramatic turn as Alvito and Edmilson struck in quick succession to reduce the deficit to 4-3. East Bengal came agonisingly close to an equaliser, only for Dipendu Biswas to miss a gilt-edged opportunity in the closing stages. The match also carried added intrigue as Mohun Bagan legend Subrata Bhattacharya took charge of East Bengal for the first time as head coach.
