England have named their playing XI for the upcoming first ODI against India, set to take place at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday, July 14. The Harry Brook-led side features the majority of the same set of players who recently demolished the men in Blue by a 0-4 margin in the T20I series.

The hosts are experimenting with a new left-handed opening combination in the form of Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett. This marks the first time that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be opening the batting in ODI cricket, with all of his 19 innings so far coming entirely in the middle order.

England's middle order is rife with experience as Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jos Buttler forge the backbone of the side. The team maintains balance with two all-rounders, much like in the T20Is, with Sam Curran and Will Jacks taking up those slots.

Spearhead Jofra Archer and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson offer batting depth while taking up crucial roles with the ball. The tail comprises debutant Josh Tongue and veteran spinner Adil Rashid.

Josh Tongue had made his white-ball debut in the T20I series against India, where he bagged seven wickets in four matches at an average of 23.28 and an economy of 10.18. As far as his List A record is concerned, he has 16 wickets to his name in 15 appearances. However, he last played a 50-over contest in 2022.

The hosts have a stellar record at the iconic venue, winning their last seven matches at the venue, including their ODI World Cup 2019 clash against India. However, it was the Men in Blue who last inflicted a loss upon England at the venue during their 2014 tour.

On that occasion, Team India had chased down a 207-run target with close to 20 overs to spare, and claimed an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
