The Erode Corporation sealed a grocery shop in B.P. Agraharam and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh after banned gutkha products were found on the premises during an inspection, marking the third such violation by the establishment.

    City Health Officer S. Sivakumar led a team of Corporation officials in conducting surprise inspections at 32 commercial establishments in Wards 7 and 15 on Saturday (July 11, 2026).

    During the inspection, officials seized banned gutkha products from the grocery shop owned by Jeganathan. The Corporation officials said the shop had been booked twice earlier for similar violations and had been warned on both occasions. As the offence was repeated for a third time, the shop was sealed and the owner was fined ₹1 lakh.

    In the same drive, officials seized 39 kg of banned plastic carry bags from seven shops and imposed a total fine of ₹18,700 on the violators.

    Officials also raided a warehouse on Kurangu Kuttai Street near Kamarajar School in Ward 37 and seized 630 kg of banned plastic products stored there. A fine of ₹25,000 was imposed on the warehouse owner for stocking the prohibited plastic items.
