The police have arrested a man in a Rs 1-crore extortion case, about 1.5 years after the crime.

The accused, identified as Gaurav of Tahri village of Yamunanagar district, was apprehended at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi after being deported from the United States.

According to information, a commission agent of the Vyaspur grain market in Yamunanagar district, Shiv Kumar, lodged a complaint with the Vyaspur police on December 22, 2024, alleging that he had received a threatening call on December 19, 2024.

The commission agent alleged that the caller had demanded Rs 1 crore from him and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to give him the money.

Vinod Kumar, SHO, Vyaspur police station, said that Gaurav had fled to the United States after the incident.

He said that following his deportation, the police had received information that he would arrive at the Delhi airport, where a police team had arrested him.

He further said that during the operation, the police recovered the accused’s passport, some currency in dollars and bank cards.

According to information, the police had earlier arrested some other suspects in connection with this extortion case, including Harpreet, Gurpreet Singh and Dipesh Sharma.

The police had also recovered a car, motorcycles and several mobile phones allegedly used in the crime.

The police are now questioning Gaurav to gather further information about the extortion racket and possible links with organised crime.

According to the Vyaspur police, Gaurav allegedly demanded extortion money from the commission agent, posing as an associate of the Goldy Brar gang.

The SHO further said that after his arrest, the accused was produced in a court at Jagadhri on Friday and the court remanded him to three days of police custody.
