A joint council of various trade unions staged a day-long protest at Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) here on Tuesday against the alleged anti-worker policies of the management and the production paralysis in the public sector undertaking.

The protesters staged a sit-in in front of the FACT Udyogmandal time gate, alleging that the suspension of production had pushed around 500 temporary workers in loading, bagging and transport sections into severe financial distress.

The major demands of the agitators included an emergency action plan to resume production, the recruitment of permanent employees, and the payment of salary arrears between 2017 and 2022. The protesters also demanded that the shift allowance reforms be implemented immediately.

INTUC district committee member T.M. Saheer chaired the meet. FEA general secretary Santhosh Babu, FWO general secretary Tony M.P. and FEC (INTUC) general secretary V.A. Nasser spoke.
