The Sirsa police have taken the alleged mastermind of a fake currency racket on a three-day police remand through a production warrant on Friday.
The gang members would wear fake police uniforms to target people. Investigators are now questioning him to trace the counterfeit currency supply chain and identify others linked to the network.
The accused, Bhura Singh, alias Bhuria, a resident of Kirti Nagar on Kanganpur Road in Sirsa, is accused of supplying fake currency to the gang.
According to the police, the gang lured unsuspecting people by promising to double their money.
Victims were called to secluded locations, where gang members dressed as ASIs and SIs would arrive, threaten them with police action, and exchange fake currency for genuine cash before fleeing.
The police said Bhura Singh has around 30 criminal cases registered against him in Sirsa, Hisar, Jind and Rajasthan, including cases of fake currency supply, fraud and cheating. He is also a history-sheeter at the Sirsa City police station.
The racket was first exposed last year when the Civil Lines police arrested two gang members and recovered fake currency worth Rs 50,000, police uniforms and other items.
During the investigation, the police found that a man from Tibbi in Rajasthan had been cheated of Rs 10,000 after being given counterfeit notes worth
Rs 20,000.
The arrested accused allegedly disclosed that Bhura Singh had arranged the fake currency.
The police said Bhura Singh was already lodged in jail in connection with a fake currency supply case registered at the Nathusari Chopta police station.
During the remand, he will be questioned about the source of the counterfeit notes, the supply chain, other gang members and places used by the network. The police said action would be taken against everyone found involved in the racket.
