Delhi Police has registered 10 FIRs against unidentified persons in connection with the ongoing protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, an officer said on Wednesday. Of these, four FIRs have been filed at the Sansad Marg police station, three at Connaught Place, and one each at Mandir Marg, Kartavya Path and Barakhamba Road.
The FIRs were registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assaulting public servant, rioting and unlawful assembly.
Meanwhile, the police issued a release stating that Assistant Commissioner of Police Jai Prakash sustained an injury to his forehead during stone pelting at Jantar Mantar around 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday. “When protesters resorted to stone-pelting, one of the stones hit the ACP on the forehead. He has been shifted to the hospital for treatment,” the statement read.
The police reported that nearly 200 officers have been injured so far. There has been no official word on the number of injured protesters since the police crackdown on Monday.
Meanwhile, some lawyers alleged that the police detained 22 individuals, including five minors, from a police checkpoint at Nizamuddin intersection on Wednesday evening for violating Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita, which prohibits the assembly of five or more persons, and later released them.
“They were taken to the Badarpur police station after being picked up from a police checkpoint near Nizamuddin intersection,” said Aishwarya Nabh, a lawyer.
Another lawyer, Angad Gautam, said most of the detainees belong to the minority community and at least five are minors.
The lawyers claimed there has been no official communication regarding the extension of BNSS Section 163, which was imposed in the New Delhi district on Monday, to other parts of the city.
When reached for response, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari said the official prohibitory orders had been put up inside the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station and that residents had been informed through meetings with community representatives.
“I agree that, considering the situation, it should have been put up on social media as well. Next time, we will take care of it,” said the DCP. He added that prohibitory orders have also been extended to other areas in the district such as Jamia Nagar.
The Hindu also reached out to the Deputy Commissioners of Police of South East, South, South West, North, North East and North West districts. However, no response was received till the time of going to press.
