Four people were killed, and one critically injured, after a car rammed a tree at Koodali, Kumbam, near Chalode on the Kannur-Mattannur airport road on Friday (July 10).

    The deceased have been identified as Shan, son of Siraj, Mannath house, Alavil, Kannur, Harsh Sathuri of Hyderabad, Param Chethri Bahadur of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and Rizwan of Kanhangad. The injured, Aditya Krishnadeep of Thiruvambady, Thrissur, is undergoing treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital, Kannur.

    According to police, the occupants of the car were travelling from Bengaluru to Kannur to attend a marriage function when the accident occurred. Police said Param was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

    Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with Mattannur police and residents, cut open the mangled vehicle to rescue the occupants trapped inside.

    Four of them succumbed to their injuries while Aditya was rushed to Baby Memorial Hospital.

    The impact of the collision completely wrecked the car. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at a high speed before ramming the tree.

    The bodies of three victims have been shifted to Baby Memorial Hospital, while the fourth has been kept at Kannur District Hospital for postmortem.

    Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
