Four teenagers were feared dead after they went missing while bathing in the Yamuna, the police said on Monday.
According to a police officer, they received a PCR call around 7.45 p.m. on Sunday from Hiranki village in Outer North district reporting the incident.
The officer said five boys aged around 14 to 15 years had gone to the river for a bath. One of them raised an alarm after the others were swept away by strong currents. Though locals from nearby agricultural fields rushed to their aid, the boys had already been carried away by the water.
“Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Delhi Fire Services and Delhi Police have been carrying out a search operation since Sunday evening. All possible efforts are being made to trace the missing children,” the officer said.
In another case, two boys aged 8 and 10 drowned in a water-filled pit in Mukhmelpur village on Sunday, the police said.
“The boys went out to play in an agricultural field when they accidentally fell into the pit, which was dug up for collecting excess rainwater,” an officer said. Both were taken to the hospital where they were declared brought dead, the officer added. Their bodies were sent to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital for post-mortem.
The police have registered a case of death by negligence against the owner of the pit and launched an investigation to trace the person responsible.
