A man from Kerala travelled more than 1,200 kilometres to repay a debt he had carried in his heart for over three decades. Using Google Maps and Google Gemini AI, Mohammed Ismail tracked down his former colleague in Telangana after losing contact with him for 31 years.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, Ismail's remarkable journey has won widespread praise, with many hailing it as a rare example of integrity, gratitude and friendship in the digital age.

A loan taken in Saudi Arabia remained unpaid for 31 years

The story dates back to the early 1990s, when Mohammed Ismail and Edla Lachanna worked together at a construction company in Saudi Arabia.

During a difficult financial period, Ismail borrowed 3,000 Saudi Riyals from Lachanna. Shortly afterwards, both men returned to India and eventually settled in their respective hometowns. Over the years, they lost contact, and the loan remained unpaid.

While Lachanna had reportedly forgotten about the money, Ismail never forgot the kindness shown to him. According to The New Indian Express, he remained determined to repay the debt, even after more than three decades.

Google Maps and Gemini AI helped reunite two former colleagues

With only a vague memory that Lachanna belonged to Dharmapuri in Telangana's Jagtial district, Ismail turned to modern technology to continue his search.

As reported by The New Indian Express, he used Google Maps and Google Gemini AI to narrow down the location before travelling from Palakkad in Kerala via Hyderabad to Jagtial district.

After reaching the village, Ismail located Lachanna's residence, only to learn that his former colleague was once again working in Saudi Arabia.

WhatsApp video call completed an emotional reunion

Although Lachanna was abroad, his family arranged a WhatsApp video call between the two men.

According to the report, Lachanna immediately recognised Ismail despite the passage of 31 years.

During the conversation, Ismail reminded him about the loan he had taken decades earlier and insisted on settling it. He transferred Rs 25,000, which he considered equivalent to the original amount borrowed, to Lachanna's family through PhonePe.

Family says they were moved by Ismail's honesty

Lachanna's family said they were overwhelmed by Ismail's unexpected visit and his determination to honour a decades-old commitment.

According to The New Indian Express, Lachanna's son Abhilash said: "We were surprised by his sincerity. When he borrowed the money from my father, I wasn't even born."

His wife, Gangavva, also expressed gratitude and said the family was deeply touched by Ismail's honesty and sense of responsibility.

Story highlights how technology can reconnect lives

Beyond the emotional reunion, the incident also illustrates how digital tools can reconnect people separated by time and distance.

What began as a search using Google Maps and Gemini AI ended with the repayment of a long-forgotten loan and the revival of a friendship that had been lost for more than three decades.
