According to recent reports from news.com.au, GTA 6 will require ID verification to be accessed in Australia. This is because of the Online Safety Act that came into effect in the land down under, disallowing youngsters to access certain content on the internet that is rated R18+.
So every Australian fan of the franchise might have to pull out their real driver's license or other official document to confirm their age before roaming the streets of Leonida. Here are more details about the matter.
On July 6, 2026, news.com.au reported that Australian players will have to verify their age before enjoying GTA 6. It then explained that the Online Safety Act implemented by the government was behind this mandate. The act's bill was passed in 2021, but ID verification for online titles was enforced across the country by eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant in March 2026.
Though the game has not received an official rating from the Australian Classification Board, it is highly likely to get an R18+ rating. According to the Online Safety Act, any R18+ rated content will require players to scan their IDs so that security software can verify whether they are eligible to play the game.
Another detail is that the age verification system will only come into effect if GTA 6 comes with a multiplayer element. As of now, Rockstar Games has not revealed anything about the Online aspect of their next title.
According to the Australian Government's eSafety website, the ID verification does not apply to single-player titles:
GTA 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026, and can be pre-ordered from PS, XBOX, Rockstar Games, and third-party digital and physical stores.
In the past, Rockstar Games has implemented the age verification system for GTA Online. This was after eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant announced that the new law will be imposed across the country from Monday, March 9, 2026. The Sydney Morning Herald report also states that any company that fails to comply with these rules will have to face a $49.5 million fine per breach.
Before the Southern country, the UK also tightened the rules under the Online Safety Act, which came into effect in August 2025. Following this rule, Rockstar Games started working on an age verification system, which was reported by Tex2.
Many other countries are likely to receive the mandatory age verification system for GTA Online as well.
