United States President Donald Trump hailed Ferran Torres as a “great player” after the forward wore a cap that appeared to reference his political branding during Spain’s FIFA World Cup trophy parade.

Torres was Spain’s hero at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19, scoring the only goal to secure his country’s second FIFA World Cup title in the final against Argentina. During La Roja’s trophy parade, Torres sparked discussions by donning a “Make Spain Great Again” cap.

The four-word message on the Spaniard’s headwear closely mirrors “Make America Great Again”, the political slogan associated with Donald Trump.

The footage has since reached the U.S. president, who made glowing remarks about the Barcelona forward and described his action as a “nice tribute”. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said of Torres:

Trump attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup final and joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino in presenting the players with their medals before jointly handing the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri.

Not only did Torres get Trump’s approval for his choice of celebration, but The White House also endorsed the forward’s gesture. The White House reposted the video of the player, with the caption, “Everyone wants in on the movement.”

Spain head coach Luis De la Fuente spoke emotionally about Torres after the 26-year-old’s extra-time goal proved to be the winner against Argentina.

Although Torres mostly played as a substitute for Spain throughout the tournament, De la Fuente said the Barcelona forward’s 106th-minute goal was his way of silencing his critics.

Torres played for 58 minutes in the World Cup final after coming on for Mikel Oyarzabal in the second half. The former Manchester City man made his senior debut for Spain in 2020 and has made 65 appearances to date.
