Baijnath SDM Sankalp Gautam said all individual trekkers and trekking groups will now have to register and obtain permission at designated disaster management check posts before beginning their journey. The registration system has been introduced to facilitate prompt rescue operations and improve the safety of trekkers during emergencies.
The administration has cited heightened risks during the monsoon, including slippery trails, flashfloods, poor visibility and sudden weather changes, which have led to several incidents in recent years.
Under the new arrangement, disaster management check posts will operate daily from 5 am to 5 pm on 10 identified trekking routes across Kangra district. In Baijnath subdivision, check posts will be established on the Thamsar Pass (18,000 ft) and Jalsu Pass (11,000 ft) routes, besides other trekking destinations located at elevations above 2,500-3,000 metres.
Before starting their trek, visitors must provide details of their trekking route, contact number, email ID, photographs of all group members and their expected time of return. The mandatory registration system will remain in force till October 15 as part of the administration's monsoon safety measures.
