The Hisar police have arrested two cyber fraudsters from Nadka village in Rajasthan's Alwar district for allegedly posing as Haryana Public Health Engineering and Public Works Department Minister Ranbir Gangwa and making calls to government officials and BJP leaders using a mobile number fraudulently issued in the minister's name.

Police sources said a case had been registered under Sections 66C and 84C of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, along with Sections 204, 318(2) and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), on charges of fraudulent use of another person's electronic identity, cheating, impersonation and related offences.

According to the police, the accused procured the SIM card using forged documents in Gangwa's name, with even Truecaller displaying the minister's identity. They also used a WhatsApp profile picture from a July 1 event featuring the minister and other BJP leaders to make their identity appear genuine.

During the investigation, police found that the accused called Public Health Department Superintending Engineer Bhupender Singh in Ambala and PWD Sub-Divisional Officer Prem Singh in Gurugram, asking them to help a person who would meet them.

They also contacted BJP district presidents in Panipat and Karnal, introducing themselves as the minister's personal assistant (PA). In one instance, the caller claimed that a person known to the minister had been transferred and offered to sell household furniture at half price for Rs 75,000.

The fraud came to light when the minister's close aide, Satbir Verma, called the suspect on July 20. The caller allegedly identified himself as Cabinet Minister Ranbir Gangwa. However, Verma, who spends most of his time with the minister, became suspicious and cross-checked with Gangwa.

Police sources said investigators were examining whether the accused had secured any undue favour through the impersonation.
