New Delhi: Hossam Hassan’s passionate touchline presence has made him one of the biggest talking points of Egypt’s FIFA World Cup campaign. After their heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16, the Egyptian coach found himself at the centre of a heated debate over his actions during and after the match.

Egypt were close to producing one of the biggest shocks of the tournament after taking a 2-0 lead against the defending champions. However, Argentina completed a stunning comeback with Enzo Fernandez scoring a late winner in stoppage time to send Egypt out of the competition.

The defeat was followed by frustration from the Egyptian camp with players and staff protesting several refereeing decisions. During one heated moment, Hassan raised his arms to form an X gesture which is recognised by FIFA as a symbol used in its anti-racism protocol. The referee later showed him a yellow card.

The incident added to the divided reactions surrounding Hassan. Some supporters praised him for his emotional defence of his team and his public support for Palestine while critics accused him of allowing politics to overshadow football and failing to accept defeat.

Despite the controversy, Egypt’s World Cup campaign was a historic one. The team reached the knockout stage after strong performances in the group phase before defeating Australia on penalties to reach the Round of 16.

Against Argentina, Egypt looked capable of creating one of the tournament’s biggest surprises as they led 2-0 and forced the South Americans into a difficult battle but Argentina’s experience eventually proved decisive.

After the match, Hassan continued to express his frustration, claiming Egypt had been treated unfairly and suggesting that key decisions influenced the outcome.

“We have been treated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice,” Hassan said during the post-match press conference.

While some backed the coach’s passion and his desire to defend his players, others felt his reactions after the defeat crossed a line. Hassan’s actions have ensured that Egypt’s World Cup journey will be remembered not only for their performances on the pitch but also for the controversy surrounding their outspoken coach.
