India’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 was confirmed even before the opening ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday as boxer Lovlina Borgohain was placed directly in the women’s 75kg semifinals.
The category in which the 28-year-old Lovlina is set to compete only has five participants. Consequently, the Indian has been given a bye to the semifinals that guarantees her at least a bronze medal.
Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina will be up against Tuvalu’s T.K.B.P. Taafaki in the semifinals on July. For Lovlina, it will be her maiden Commonwealth Games medal.
