The Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police booked a total of 899 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted over the weekend, reiterating their zero-tolerance policy against drunk driving.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police registered 572 cases during a two-day special drive conducted on July 24 and 25. Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 327 motorists during a weekend special drive. Police said all offenders would be produced before the court.
The Cyberabad police also warned that motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol and causing fatal accidents would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
The police said that during the previous week, from July 20 to 25, courts disposed of 182 drunken driving cases in Cyberabad. Four offenders were awarded imprisonment along with a fine, two were sentenced to social service in addition to a fine, while 176 were imposed fines.
