Soon after Hyderabad native Syed Sohail Uddin, originally from Toli Chowki, was reportedly stabbed several times in Salt Lake County, Utah, USA, Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan wrote to Union Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar seeking his immediate intervention.
According to the West Valley City Police’s X account, the incident occurred on July 14 when the suspect approached Mr. Sohail and, after a “brief interaction”, “pulled out a knife and began stabbing him multiple times”. Bystanders pulled the accused away from the victim and subdued him, police said. Mr. Sohail underwent surgery.
“We are investigating any possible motives and any possible relationship between the suspect and victim,” the police stated. US media identified the suspect as Peter Michael Larsen and reported that Mr. Sohail was attacked because of his religion.
Mr. Khan, a former corporator, said in his letter to the Union Minister that Mr. Sohail had been working in the U.S. for about two years. He told the media that he met Mr. Sohail’s family and enquired about his well-being.
The MBT leader requested Mr. Jaishankar to instruct the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., to contact Mr. Sohail and extend all necessary consular assistance, liaise with authorities in Utah to ensure justice is delivered, provide legal and medical assistance, and ensure the protection of Indian nationals, especially those belonging to vulnerable and minority communities. He also sought the issuance of visas to Mr. Sohail’s family members on humanitarian grounds.
