Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar asked the selectors not to pick batters based on their IPL performances going forward. The Men in Blue were trashed in England, suffering a 0-4 defeat in the five-match T20I series.
Used to batting on flat tracks back home and in the IPL, the visitors' batters failed to adapt in Ireland and England, which exposed their weakness in different conditions and pitches.
Sanjay Manjrekar believed that the challenge for the selectors would be to look at batters without their IPL performances and then pick those who are capable enough. He added that the home run, where the Men in Blue dominated, was over now, with the majority of T20 cricket to be played overseas.
Shreyas Iyer and his troops will play T20I series in Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Cricket will be part of the LA Olympics 2028 and will be played in the T20 format in the USA. The 2028 T20 World Cup is also set to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Further, Sanjay Manjrekar said that it would be easy to blame the players for the successive T20I series defeats away from home. However, he stated that the right thing would be to blame those who made these batters look good with 'heavy make-up' by preparing flat tracks in the IPL.
The world champions will have to figure out ways of countering different conditions and performing on different pitches while playing overseas. Following their struggles in Ireland and England, where there was some movement, extra bounce, and the odd turn, the team suffered, losing their No.1 T20I ranking after failing to win a single game out of the seven T20Is in the UK.
