Every edition of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) has produced new Indian heroes, with the competition serving as one of India’s most successful stages in international sport.
From legendary wrestlers to celebrated weightlifters, India’s medal tally has grown steadily over the years, but which sport has contributed the most to that success?
Shooting has long been the backbone of India’s Commonwealth Games success. Although wrestling and badminton have dominated the headlines in recent years, it was not always the case.
Despite being excluded in 2022, a trend that continues into the current edition, shooting remains India’s most decorated Commonwealth Games sport, with Indian shooters amassing 135 medals overall.
Why is it excluded from the current edition?
Following Victoria’s withdrawal as the host of the 2026 Friendly Games, Glasgow assumed hosting responsibilities for a significantly smaller-scale event. To curb expenses for a downscaled event, the host elected to stage just 11 sports.
As a result, the preliminarily included shooting was axed for the final cut of games.
From India’s first medal in 1982 to its historic 30-medal stint in 2010, followed by its latest success in 2018, here is a list of India’s shooting medals and winners in the Games across the years.
