Roads dug up for infrastructure works across Erode district have been left unattended by contractors, causing hardship to motorists and the public, Erode MP K.E. Prakash said on Wednesday (July 8, 2026).

Addressing reporters after a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee, Mr. Prakash urged the State Highways Department to expedite the pending works. Cancellation of several road work tenders had adversely affected contractors. The MP accused the State government of neglecting public issues while engaging in political attacks on the Opposition. Unlike the previous DMK government, which had continued and improved schemes launched by the AIADMK, the present government had cancelled several projects initiated by the DMK administration and renamed others, he said.

Mr. Prakash said proposals had been prepared to construct flyovers at eight key locations in the district, including the Kalaimadu Silai Junction and the Erode railway station area, to ease traffic congestion. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had accorded in-principle approval for a flyover near the railway station. However, preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) was delayed. The cost of constructing the flyover was estimated at about ₹100 crore a kilometre, with the expenditure to be shared by the Railways and the State government. The Railways had agreed to bear its share of the cost. Another flyover was proposed at K.K. Nagar on Chennimalai Road, he said.
