New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday joined Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the India-Australia CEO Forum and Economic Roadmap Business Reception in Melbourne, where both leaders called for stronger economic cooperation and deeper strategic ties between the two countries.
Addressing business leaders, PM Modi said the growing partnership between India and Australia had become more important at a time of global uncertainty.
“The presence of all of you is a symbol of our shared confidence and shared aspirations. Today, the world is going through a period of uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and an energy crisis. At such a time, it is both natural and necessary for India and Australia to move forward as natural and trusted partners. Over the past few years, we have built a strong framework for future cooperation by combining the capabilities of both countries,” he said.
PM Modi arrived in Australia on Wednesday after concluding the Indonesia leg of his three-nation tour. He received a warm welcome from members of the Indian community in Melbourne, where cultural performances celebrated the friendship between the two nations.
One of the main performances featured Maa Tujhe Salaam by the Australian-India Orchestra. Sharing a video on X, Modi described the rendition as “wonderful” and said it reflected how music brings people from both countries closer together.
He also said the performance reflected the global appeal of Vande Mataram as India marks the song’s 150th anniversary.
The Prime Minister also watched a musical performance combining Australia’s traditional didgeridoo with India’s tabla by Ron Murray and Dr Sam Evans. According to Modi, the collaboration reflected the deep cultural bond shared by the two countries while preserving their rich musical traditions.
He later attended a Kathak performance and said it was encouraging to see Indian classical dance becoming increasingly popular across Australia.
During his three-day visit, PM Modi and Albanese are expected to hold detailed discussions on defence and security, trade and investment, education, mobility, critical technologies, sports and people-to-people ties.
After completing his Australia visit, the Prime Minister will travel to New Zealand for the final leg of his three-nation tour.
