The Kerala Police have suspended Yahiya M., an Inspector attached to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), for allegedly creating a ruckus and attempting to forcibly free two detainees from the lock-up at the Nedumangad police station.

P. Prakash, Inspector General of Police, SCRB, issued an order placing the officer under immediate suspension. The officer, assigned to the Modus Operandi Information System (MOIS) wing, faces a detailed inquiry for the disruptive incident at the police station.

The suspension order was issued based on reports submitted by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thiruvananthapuram Range, and the District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram Rural).

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a clash in Chullimanoor in Nedumangad, in which five criminal cases were registered. Besides, the police detained certain suspects on July 16 to prevent further violence in the region.

The situation escalated the next day when the suspended officer barged into the station premises without the permission of the police personnel on security duty, and attempted to unlawfully release the detained suspects who were held in preventive custody.

Suspecting that Mr. Yahiya was under the influence of alcohol, the sub-inspector placed him under arrest. He was subsequently taken to the Nedumangad district hospital for medical examination. Upon being brought back to the station, the inspector reportedly threatened the on-duty officers. As a result, a criminal case was registered against him, the suspension order states.

The Inspector General, SCRB, observed that the inspector’s behaviour constitutes a grave breach of discipline, a direct challenge to the legal actions, and actions completely unbecoming of a member of a disciplined force. The order also highlighted that the incident severely tarnished the public reputation of the police department.
