According to multiple reports, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas tried acquiring Jason Robertson via a trade deal with the Dallas Stars. However, a move to the Penguins never materialized, and Robertson eventually filed for salary arbitration on July 5th.
While many fans have given up hope of the Penguins acquiring Robertson, an NHL Insider revealed that a chance of Robertson going to the Penguins still exists. In his column on The Athletic, NHL Insider Josh Yohe revealed that the Penguins are open to acquiring Robertson.
Yohe revealed that the franchise believes there is a chance that Jason Robertson would agree to play in Pittsburgh. Yohe further wrote:
While the Penguins still have interest in landing Jason Robertson, the player is currently ineligible to receive an offer sheet as he filed for arbritation. Yohe concluded his report by writing that if Kyle Dubas can make a substantial offer for Robertson, then there is a growing belief in the Penguins organization that Robertson would be happy to come to Pittsburgh.
Jason Robertson turned down an eight-year, $120 million offer from the Seattle Kraken in the ongoing offseason. This move by Robertson indicated that he wishes to stay with the Dallas Stars.
While Robertson seemingly made his preference clear, Stars GM Jim Nill revealed that the team is also interested in re-signing Robertson. In a media interaction that took place in the last week of June, Nill called Robertson a good player and provided an update on the negotiations.
While Nill seemed hopeful of sorting the situation, it's clear the two parties could not come to terms as Robertson filed for arbritation. Since Robertson has filed for arbitration, the possibility of him signing a one-year deal has opened up. This means he would become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
