Egypt took an unlikely lead against Argentina and held it through till the end of the first-half during their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 game in Atlanta on Tuesday.
The defending champion’s woes were compounded as Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the 21st minute, leaving Argentina to chase an equaliser for a major part of the game.
Mostafa Ziko then handed the Pharaohs a two-goal lead in the second half. But goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi allowed the 2022 champion to get back to parity.
If the Argentina vs Egypt match remains level at the end of 90 minutes plus stoppage time, the game will head into 30 minutes of extra-time, which will be divided into two halves.
If the winner is not determined even after that, a penalty shootout will decide which team goes into the quarterfinals.
