As the country commemorates the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, President Droupadi Mumu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives during ‘Operation Vijay’ in 1999.
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of the operation, declaring victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.
On Sunday (July 26, 2026), the Army will host a ‘Shradhanjali Samaroh’ – wreath laying ceremony – at the Kargil War Memorial in Ladakh’s Drass to pay homage to the bravehearts of the war. Union Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to address military personnel and veterans during the event to commemorate the anniversary.
President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to the valiant warriors who laid down their lives for the protection of the motherland, and said the nation shall forever remain indebted to them.

“On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay humble tribute to those valiant warriors who laid down their lives for the protection of our motherland,” Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.
Their unparalleled valour, unwavering resolve, and unparalleled patriotism stand as exemplary models of our Army’s glorious traditions, she said.
“The nation shall forever remain indebted to them. The saga of valour of those heroic warriors will continue to inspire future generations to tread the path of national service and steadfast duty,” the President said.
PM Narendra Modi said the valour of India's brave soldiers in the face of most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride.
He also said that the nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India. "Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride. Their unwavering patriotism and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations," he said in a post on X.
“On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my deepest respects to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the defense of our motherland. The nation will forever remain grateful and indebted to all those valiant soldiers who demonstrated extraordinary valor on the inaccessible peaks of Kargil in 1999,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a post on X. Mr. Singh is in Kargil today, where he will addressing soldiers on the occasion of Vijay Diwas.
“The indomitable courage, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve of the Indian Army will continue to inspire future generations with patriotism, dedication to duty, and the spirit of offering everything for the motherland,” he added.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid his tribute to the war heroes by acknowledging their “supreme sacrifice while defending India’s borders” in the 1999 war.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharg took to X to “pay homage with reverence to our immortal heroes.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and several senior BJP leaders paid tributes to the indomitable courage and unparalleled valour of soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In a post on X, Mr. Adityanath said, “Heartiest greetings to everyone on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This day is an immortal symbol of the valour, sacrifice and patriotism of our brave soldiers.” Paying homage to soldiers, he added, “Salute to all the immortal heroes of the Indian Army who laid down their lives in defence of the motherland. Union Minister of State for Finance and BJP’s Uttar Pradesh president Pankaj Chaudhary said, “On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt respects to the immortal heroes who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the motherland.” Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said Kargil Vijay Diwas was an occasion to salute the “indomitable courage, unparalleled valour, unwavering resolve and unflinching patriotism” of the Indian armed forces.
Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday paid tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the Kargil War, marking Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The Governor said the Indian Army soldiers fought valiantly under extremely harsh conditions to defend the motherland.
“Their indomitable spirit and unwavering resolve continue to inspire the youth with courage, patriotism and a spirit of selfless service,” Mr. Nazeer said in a post on ‘X’.
Similarly, the Chief Minister said Kargil Vijay Diwas is an occasion to pay solemn tribute to the brave soldiers whose extraordinary courage secured India’s victory.
“In the face of formidable terrain and relentless adversity, they stood firm to protect the nation’s sovereignty. Their supreme sacrifice and unmatched heroism continue to inspire generations and remain a timeless symbol of patriotism and national pride,” Mr. Naidu said in a post on ‘X’.
