The Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) will launch a special outreach campaign to help property owners avail the benefit of the newly announced 75 per cent interest waiver on pending property tax dues.

The fresh relief scheme, announced for property owners who failed to clear their dues during the previous one-time settlement scheme, will remain in force till August 31, 2026, and will cover outstanding property tax dues for the financial years 2010-11 to 2024-25.

Earlier, the state government had announced a 100 per cent waiver on interest from May 15 to June 30, but many taxpayers could not avail the benefit. To encourage the remaining property owners to clear their dues, the government has now extended the scheme with a 75 per cent interest rebate.

“To get relief under the revised notification, property owners have to self-certify their property information on the Property Management System Portal and obtain a property tax no-dues certificate. Officials of the property tax branch have been asked to personally contact property tax defaulters and motivate them to deposit their pending dues before the expiry of the scheme,” said Karnal Municipal Corporation Commissioner Saloni Sharma.

She made it clear that strict action would be initiated after August 31 against those who continue to default despite the relief. She warned that major defaulters would face legal action, including sealing and attachment of properties, as per the provisions of the Municipal Act.

Special emphasis will be laid on recovering dues from commercial establishments and high-value defaulters. Officials have been directed to prepare category-wise lists of taxpayers with pending dues exceeding Rs 1 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, Rs 10 lakh, Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore, and adopt separate recovery strategies for each category.

“Officials have also been instructed to pursue outstanding property tax dues from various state and Central government departments through regular correspondence and continuous monitoring,” she added.

Karnal Mayor Renu Bala Gupta appealed to residents to avail the benefit of the 75 per cent interest waiver.

She said that in case of default, interest at the rate of 1.5 per cent per month or part thereof will be levied on outstanding dues.

The Mayor further said that the civic body has collected Rs 18.50 crore in property tax so far during the current financial year against a target of Rs 30 crore.
