New Delhi: Karnataka Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh carried out a surprise reality check on a BMTC bus in Bengaluru by travelling as an ordinary passenger in an apparent attempt to assess commuter experiences and identify irregularities in the public transport system.
Wearing a face mask to avoid being recognised, the minister boarded a BMTC bus travelling from Bhoopasandra to Hebbal. During the journey, he asked the conductor for two tickets and handed over a Rs 100 note as payment.
According to the incident, the conductor told him that he did not have enough change and asked the passenger to provide Rs 12 in change first. When the minister replied that he did not have the exact amount, the conductor, unaware of his identity, allegedly told him to get off the bus if he could not pay with change.
The situation changed after Byrathi Suresh removed his mask and revealed his identity. The conductor and other staff on the bus were reportedly taken by surprise after realising they had been speaking to the minister.
The incident highlighted a common complaint raised by BMTC passengers, many of whom have alleged that they frequently face inconvenience and arguments over the issue of change while purchasing tickets.
The surprise inspection was conducted as part of the minister’s effort to understand the challenges faced by commuters firsthand and to examine complaints regarding the functioning of BMTC services. Officials believe the visit has brought attention to passenger treatment and operational issues that require corrective measures within the city’s public transport system.
