The Kerala High Court has vacated the order providing police protection to the woman who had gone viral during the Kumbh Mela. The State informed the court that the woman and her husband, Farmaan Khan, an actor, who are wanted by the Madhya Pradesh Police, remained unreachable after repeated attempts by the police to locate them.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas further directed the police to provide protection if the woman approached them and gave her request in writing. The woman had moved the High Court in June after allegedly receiving a threat to her life. Her counsel also informed the court that he had not received any instructions from her.
After the couple got married in March, her father had registered a complaint against Mr. Khan alleging kidnapp, offence against SC/ST persons, and child marriage. Her family had also accused him of engaging in “love jihad” through the inter-faith marriage. The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes had also issued a probe into the age of the woman, when allegations arose that she had been a minor at the time of marriage.
Mr. Khan’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Special Judge under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Mandleshwar, Madhya Pradesh and thereafter, his petition to extend his transit bail was also dismissed by the Kerala High Court.
