The skywalk project linking the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus with the newly constructed railway station has been delayed and is expected to be completed by this year-end. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is executing the project at a cost of ₹79 crore.
Southern Railway officials said that while the civil work for the construction of the halt railway station had been completed, the delay involved the installation of the skywalk.
A senior CMDA official said the project was being executed in three phases — installing the first deck on GST Road towards Chengalpattu, the second deck towards Tambaram, and the third deck linking the railway station through the private land acquired for creating the access way.
The first girder on the GST Road has been installed, and work on installing lifts at the bus terminus is under way.
The official said the second phase had been delayed as the contractor was awaiting traffic police clearance. Work on installing the third deck has begun, with more than 20% of the work completed.
The official said there was also a delay in obtaining permission from Southern Railway for installing a girder across the railway tracks and in constructing an island platform.
“Permission has been sought for fixing a girder across the railway tracks, but the Railway officials are yet to give the go ahead, as it involves stopping train services for a minimum of five hours,” he said, adding that the project was expected to be completed by December first week.
