The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has proposed a series of measures to address water scarcity in the West Kochi region. These include laying new pipelines, replacing ageing asbestos pipes with cast iron pipes, and increasing the frequency of water pumping. Kumbalangi, Mattancherry, and Chellanam are among the areas expected to benefit.

According to a KWA source, a major project to relay pipelines along the Pandikudi-Chellanam road is being considered. “The 10-km stretch has a distribution network of old asbestos pipes. Several pipelines pass through private properties and even beneath buildings. There are also hidden leakages. Addressing these issues will improve water availability in Chellanam,” the source said.

The KWA has been considering the project for some time, but funding remains a problem as it is expected to cost ₹35 crore to ₹40 crore, including road restoration.

In Kumbalangi, measures under consideration include renovating the overhead tank at the Kumbalangi pump house and renovating and relaying parts of the distribution network.

The source added that Mattancherry would benefit from the setting up of the 190-MLD water treatment plant at Aluva and the Asian Development Bank-funded drinking water supply optimisation project being implemented by a French private firm.

According to KWA sources, areas within the Kochi Corporation limits require 50 million litres of drinking water a day, but currently receive only 36.5 million litres. Similarly, Kumbalangi panchayat requires 8 million litres a day but receives only 5 million litres.

“These issues can be addressed only when the 190-MLD plant becomes a reality. Improving the distribution network, replacing old pipes, and fixing leaks will help prevent water loss. Once the plant is commissioned, these areas will have surplus water,” a KWA source said.
