Just as a lotus blossoms only when it turns towards the sun, the individual soul (Jivatma) can attain the Supreme Lord (Paramatma) only through the grace of an Acharya (spiritual preceptor). The Acharya is the divine bridge who leads the soul to God, said Damal Perundevi in a discourse.
The lives of Lord Rama and Jagadacharya Sri Ramanuja reveal many profound similarities that reflect their divine mission. Both incarnated during the Tamil month of Chithirai. Lord Rama willingly entered the forest in obedience to His father, King Dasaratha, enduring immense hardships. Likewise, Ramanuja journeyed through the Vindhya forests, facing many dangers while spreading the path of devotion. The purpose of both incarnations was the welfare of humanity and the liberation of countless souls.
In the Ramavataram, Lakshmana, the younger brother (Anuja) of Lord Rama, considered the manifestation of Adi Sesha, rendered unwavering service to Lord Rama. In the Kali Yuga, the same Adisesha incarnated as Ramanuja, dedicated his life to guiding souls towards moksha through devotion, surrender, and the teachings of scriptures.
Another beautiful similarity is that Lord Rama listened to His own divine history through Lava and Kusa’s recitation of the Ramayana. Likewise, Ramanuja heard his own glories through the Ramanuja Nootrandadhi, composed by Thiruvarangathu Amudanar. Tradition also states that Ramanuja expounded the inner meanings of the Ramayana before Lord Varadaraja and Perundevi Thayar.
Both Lord Rama and Ramanuja were born after their parents performed the sacred Putrakameshti Yaga. Ramanuja received Pancha Samskara from Periya Nambi at Madurantakam, the abode of Lord Eri Katha Ramar, further highlighting his special connection with Lord Rama. Thus, both remain eternal guides, exemplifying righteousness, compassion, steadfast dharma, and the path to liberation.
