A 34-year-old man died in a freak mishap after he was trapped in a goods lift at a sweet shop in Hisar town on Sunday.

According to information, the neck of the deceased got stuck between the doors of the elevator and was severed when the lift jerked. His neck became entangled in the lift wires, while the rest of his body remained inside the elevator.

The deceased was identified as Jasbir, a resident of Kumbha Khera village in the district. He had visited his relative Vijay, who worked at the shop.

Sweet shop owner Anil Goyal said his elder son, Deepak Goyal, managed the shop and that they were away on some work when the incident occurred. He said the worker Vijay stayed back at the shop, while his maternal aunt's son, Jasbir, had arrived there the previous day. Vijay asked him to stay overnight at the shop.

According to information, the incident took place on Sunday morning when Jasbir used the goods lift to bring down items kept on the second floor. Anil Goyal said that as Jasbir reached the second floor, his neck suddenly got trapped between the lift doors. The lift then jerked, severing his neck, which got entangled in the lift wires, killing him on the spot. The rest of his body remained inside the lift.

Goyal said all regular workers used the staircase to move between floors and that the lift was meant only for transporting goods. Jasbir had come to the shop for the first time and was possibly using the lift for the first time.

Meanwhile, Rambir, the father of the deceased, suspected foul play in his son's death and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Hisar City police station SHO Amit Kundu said the incident appeared to be a mishap in the preliminary investigation. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the exact circumstances will become clear after the report is received, he said.
