A 32-year-old man of Kalkurichi killed his 45-year-old aunt and inflicted serious cut injuries on her daughter near Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday (July 15, 2026).

The police said the families had decided on marriage between the accused Yuvaraja and the injured woman Varsha a few weeks ago. However, Varsha was reportedly not interested for the marriage.

Angered over the rejection, Yuvaraja, who also lives in the same street, had gone to Varsha’s house around 8.30 a.m. and attacked her with a machete while she was washing clothes outside the house.

When he inflicted multiple cut injuries on the young woman, Varsha’s mother, Vinayakajothi noticed the murderous attack on her daughter and rushed to her rescue.

When Vinayakajothi tried to prevent further attack, Yuvaraja attacked her too, following which she died on the spot.

Neighbours rushed the injured Varsha to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, the accused surrendered before Mallankinaru police.
