A two-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man were killed in road accidents in Tiruchi on Saturday. The police gave the name of the child as R. Dijo Joy of Ponmalaipatti.

    The child was walking with his grandmother, holding her hand, on Adaikalamatha Kovil Street at the crack of a dawn when the accident occurred. Police sources said that Dijo suddenly ran across the road shaking off his grandmother’s hand. A car that came in the opposite direction knocked him down. 

    Dijo sustained bleeding injuries on head, ear, and nose and was immediately rushed to a private hospital for treatment. However, he died without responding to medical treatment.  I. Kanikai Raj who drove the car and a relative of Dijo has been named as the accused.  The Traffic South Investigation unit has registered a case. 

    In another accident, S. Harshad, 21, riding pillion on a motorcycle was run over by an omni bus on Tiruchi-Thanjavur Road near Ganapathi Nagar junction here. Police sources said Harshad was seated behind M. Freddy, 21, the rider. The two-wheeler tried to overtake a omni bus bound for Kumbakonam from Bengaluru from the left side and collided with an autorickshaw that came on the wrong side in the opposite direction.

    Harshad and Freddy fell on the road and the bus ran over Harshad killing him on the spot.  The autorickshaw driver, A. Mohamed Ibrahim, and the omni bus driver, R. Sivakumar, have been named as the accused. The Traffic South Investigation unit has registered a case.
