Continuing their search for illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, the Mangaluru City Police on Monday found 11 more Bangladesh nationals working at two construction sites in the city.

On July 9, the Surathkal police had detained eight illegal Bangladeshi immigrants working at a construction site.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Urwa police station visited a construction site in Kuntikana on Monday and questioned three persons. After verifying their records, the police found that they were illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Another team visited a construction site in Kodical, questioned 11 persons and found that eight of them were Bangladesh nationals staying in the country illegally.

Four of the 11 illegal immigrants were minors, aged between 15 and 17. The police named the remaining seven as Mohammed Kausar Ali, 21; Mohammed Nur Amin, 34; Mohammed Nahidul Islam, 22; Mohammed Humayon Kobir, 22; Mohammed Romjan Ali, 23; Mohammed Abdul Rahaman Royel, 19; and Mohammed Noyan, 24. All residents of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh, the police said.

Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy said a report would be sent to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office for orders to detain and deport them. He said a case would be booked against middleman from West Bengal, who brought them to Mangaluru to work along with some Indian labourers from different states.

In a statement, the former Councillor of Kodical, Kiran Kumar Kodical, said the Bangladesh nationals were taken away by the police on Monday morning for questioning. They had been working as construction labourers in the city for the past two years. They were found to be using fake Aadhaar cards.

Mr. Kodical urged construction firms to verify the identity documents of workers at their sites, saying more illegal immigrants could be working in Mangaluru. If there was any suspicion about a worker, the information should be passed to the nearest police station, he said.
