The Thrissur City police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind the robbery at a house at Mannuthy here on June 7. The house owner, a senior citizen, was assaulted, tied up and robbed of 47 sovereigns of gold ornaments and cash. The incident happened at a residence near Don Bosco School, Ollukkara.

    The accused, identified as Suraj Pawar, a native of Rajasthan, was arrested from the Mandfiya police station limits in Chittorgarh district by a team comprising the Thrissur City Shadow Police and the Mannuthy police under the supervision of City Police Commissioner Nakul Rajendra Deshmukh.

    According to the police, the accused had been hiding in a village in Rajasthan. He was apprehended after a two-day surveillance operation. The police said they recovered 26 sovereigns of the stolen gold ornaments from his possession.

    The police said Suraj Pawar, originally from Sehore in Madhya Pradesh, is a habitual offender with several cases of theft and robbery registered against him in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. According to the police, members of the gang travelled across States by hitching rides in trucks and targeted houses located along highways. They allegedly broke open locks, entered houses and assaulted occupants who resisted the robbery.

    The police also claimed that the arrested accused and his associates were involved in several theft and robbery cases in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. The second and third accused in the case had been arrested earlier, they said.
