Chennai Metrowater on Friday disconnected water supply connections of eight more buildings in Taramani after they were found to be illegally drawing water from pipelines using motor pumps.

A press release from Metrowater said that following repeated complaints about an erratic water supply, a team of Metrowater officials, along with the police, organised a special inspection — conducted for the second time since June — at Bharathiyar Street, Anjugam Ammal Street, Ramasamy Street, Raniammal Street, Kattabomman Street, and Thanthai Periyar Nagar in Taramani, which falls under Adyar zone.

. Last month, officials had seized 22 motor pumps used to illegally extract drinking water.

Metrowater has intensified surveillance and issued notices to 520 households for illegally drawing drinking water using motor pumps.

The water agency has also deployed a special team to monitor all 15 zones for illegal water drawal, and ensure equitable distribution with sufficient pressure across the city.
