Fisheries Minister A. Srinath on Sunday distributed satellite phones to 74 fishermen from Tharuvaikulam in the district.

Addressing the fishermen, Mr. Srinath said that each satellite phone along with sim card cost ₹1,34,166, and the government provided 40% subsidy on the total cost. While fishermen earlier ventured up to 300 nautical miles into the sea, they now travelled 1,000 nautical miles for deep sea fishing. The satellite phones would help them stay connected and enhance their safety at sea.

He added that the residents of Tharuvaikulam had submitted several demands, which would be addressed.

Officials of the Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department were present.
