However, they weathered the early storm from the Indian bowlers and reached a dominant 61/0 in the 13th over. Yet, the Indian pacers were not to be denied as Bumrah, Prasidh and Gunroor Brar combined to pick up five wickets in no time, reducing the hosts to 80/5 in the 17th over.
Part-time pacer Shivam Dube soon joined the party, removing the dangerous Will Jacks to leave England reeling at 107/6 in the 22nd over. With the home side in danger of being bowled out early, Joe Root and Liam Dawson stitched a crucial 121-run seven-wicket partnership.
Yet, the Indians did not go away, with left-arm spinner Axar Patel bagging the final four wickets over the next 30 runs. It meant England were ultimately bowled out for a seemingly under-par 258 in the 48th over.
