Several commuters onboard a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus escaped with minor injuries after the vehicle overturned on the Sholinganallur Main Road on Sunday (July 19, 2026).

The Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation police registered a case, and are probing the incident.

A senior officer of the Tambaram Police Commissionerate said the bus from Tambaram West to Adyar (route no. 99) had more than 20 passengers onboard, and was proceeding on the Sholinganallur Main Road via Perumbakkam when the incident occurred.

As the bus neared a small stretch, designated as a one-way road, where Metro Rail work was under way, a speeding lorry approached it from the opposite direction.

To avoid crashing into the barricade, the bus driver applied a sudden brake, due to which the vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch in the Pallikaranai marshland. A few passengers, who sustained minor injuries, were admitted to the Medavakkam Government Hospital. Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Medavakkam station were engaged in recovering the bus from the ditch.
