Ricardo Vasconcelos’ 88 off 59 withstood Joe Weatherley’s 75 off 53 balls and Sonny Baker’s five-wicket haul as Northamptonshire defeated Hampshire to clinch its third T20 Blast at the Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday.
Hampshire finished as the runner-up for the second successive year, falling short of the 170-run target by 14 runs.
For Northants, James Sales finished with 3/25, and Luke Proctor (2/25) and Ben Sanderson (2/26) provided final touches in the last two overs.
Batting at number three, Weatherley anchored the chase while hitting nine fours and two sixes but couldn’t find much support from the other end until Liam Dawson walked in at seven.
The duo added 48 runs off 29 balls to push the game deep. However, a miscommunication between the two resulted in Dawson (35 off 18) short of the crease in the 17th over.
Post the dismissal, the David Willey-led side took control of the proceedings despite Weatherley at the crease. Proctor and Sanderson combined four wickets in six balls to bowl out Hampshire for 155 in the last over.
Earlier, Vasconcelos hit 11 fours and a couple of maximums to take Northants to a competitive total. Despite losing Chris Lynn early, Vasconcelos added 60 and 69 runs with Nathan McSweeney and Lewis McManus for the next two wickets.
But once Scott Currie had McManus caught in the 16th over and Baker cleaned up Vasconcelos in the next, Northants went on a freefall.
Baker completed his five-for to bowl out Northamptonshire off the penultimate ball of the innings. But a score of 169 proved too good for Hampshire to chase.
