Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to increase the size of the boundaries in home matches after the side's disappointing tour of England. After a memorable run in T20Is at home, capped off by the T20 World Cup triumph, the Men in Blue were humbled in the T20I series in Ireland and England.

Under Shreyas Iyer for the first time, India suffered 0-2 and 0-4 series defeats to Ireland and England, with the boundaries being markedly bigger compared to those at home. India also lost the three-match ODI series that followed the T20Is in England 1-2.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup and 2028 T20 World Cup set to take place in South Africa and Australia, Gavaskar suggested the Indian batters must play with similar bigger boundaries at home to get accustomed to what they could encounter overseas.

In his column for Sportstar, he wrote:

India have lost their last two ODI series away from home to England (this year) and Australia (last year).

Sunil Gavaskar further stated that bigger boundaries at home will also help the Indian spinners flight the ball more instead of the darts they predominantly delivered in the recent England T20Is and ODIs. While Adil Rashid and Will Jacks combined for nine wickets at a combined economy of under nine in 30.4 overs between them in the T20I series, the Indian spin duo of Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy picked up only three wickets in 21 combined overs at an economy of almost 11.

The boundary dimensions also played a massive role in Ireland’s 2-0 T20I series win over India, with the home spinners outbowling their Indian counterparts.
