Paolo Maldini on Monday stepped down from his role as technical director of Italian Football Federation after the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as the team head coach fell through, Sky Sports Italy reported.
Along with the Maldini, Leandro also left his role as advisor after reports emerged that the federation president Giovanni Malago was against the appointment of Pirlo. Both had been handed the charge just 10 days back in an attempt to overhaul the national setup.
Pirlo was the first choice for Maldini to take over the reins after Gennaro Gattuso stepped down following the team’s failure to reach the World Cup for the third straight edition.
But Pirlo was not considered for the job due to concerns over his connections to the Russian betting betting platforms.
