Argentina President Javier Milei took a dig at Albiceleste critics following their 1-0 extra time loss to European champions Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday (July 19).

Lionel Scaloni's side came undone against a La Roja side that dominated possession but couldn't breach an excellent Albiceleste custodian Emiliano Martinez in regulation time.

However, Ferran Torres delivered the decisive strike off the bench in the 106th minute after being set up by fellow substitute Nico Williams as La Roja celebrated their first World Cup title in 16 years.

Following Lionel Messi and Co.'s defeat in the big game, Milei said (as per GBNews)

The defeat ended the Albiceleste's record 13-game winning streak in the World Cup, stopping them just short of becoming the first team in 64 years to successfully defend their title.

Argentina commenced their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-0 win over Algeria before beating Austria 2-0, with captain Lionel Messi scoring all five goals. The Albiceleste then beat Jordan 3-1 to romp into the knockouts on a high.

In the Round of 32, Lionel Scaloni's side needed extra time to see off competition debutants Cape Verde 3-2. They then trailed Egypt by two goals with 11 minutes before scoring thrice in regulation time to reach the quarter-finals.

The Albiceleste needed extra time again, this time against 10-man Switzerland, winning 3-1, before scoring twice in the last five minutes to beat England 2-1, with Messi extending his record streak of goal contributions to 11 successive games.

However, Messi and Co. fell short in the final, joining Germany as the only sides to lose four title matches.
